This year we are proud to announce that we have become a corporate sponsor of local charity Umbrella. Based in Mackworth in Derby, Umbrella is a fantastic place that enables disabled children, young people and young adults to realise their full potential.
Umbrella supports any family with a disabled child aged 0 to 30, currently supporting over 550 children and young people (and their families) with disabilities, helping them to build confidence and their independence. They do this by:
- – Empowering parents and carers, supporting them in their care of their disabled child/young person.
- – Providing exciting, stimulating activities for children and young people such as; arts and crafts, play sessions, youth groups & community events. This encourages the development of skills, whilst having fun, giving disabled young people opportunities that non-disabled children take for granted.
– Offering one-to-one support for young Adults, either at the centre or at home.
While the centre encourages children and young people with disabilities to make friends, it also enables parents and families to come together and get the peer support they need. Families are also supported through information, guidance and much-needed respite.
We recently visited Umbrella House to have a look around the facilities, and to hear more about the important service which they provide. It was wonderful to meet some of the team and hear about the challenges they face in providing the car and services they do, the support they need, and some of the wonderful success stories they have. The facilities they have in place have been carefully designed and created to enable different areas, activities and environments to meet the varying needs of the centres users, but all come at significant price, with many of the areas requiring specialist equipment, maintenance and set up, to ensure a safe and stimulating environment for its many users. Some pieces of equipment costing anything between £3,000 and £9,000 just to purchase. It is clear why Umbrella needs our support, and why this is such an important service to so many people living in the Midlands who need this essential service and centre. It really does change lives.
Umbrella aim to raise at least £50,000 each year in order to transform and support the lives of disabled children, young adults and their families.
We look forward to collaborating with Umbrella over the course of the year and contributing towards their fundraising efforts!
